You mean the being laughed at, being stared at, keeping within their own small groups because the stares, the rude comments, the looks from down the nose of their "betters"- it all hurt. The people doing the discriminating never knew what triumphs those women had, the true dignity they had, the loyalty and they joys they had, nor did they ever see the pain and the hurts, all that was hidden, even at times from themselves. The only hurts the world was ever allowed to see were the physical ones, and they wouldnt ever admit that those hurt. Those women the characters were based on were awesome, beautiful, admirable women-each in her own way.

I'm amazed; what a question and the responses LOL. I'm a black american woman from the south eastern portion of the USA and I grew up in a rural area so let me try to clear it up for all of ya'll.
Social discrimination for poor white women, wow...
they are perceived as skanks, easy, low self esteem having, unwashed, and desparate. They tend to marry men who drink heavily and work low paying jobs and often hit them. They pop out baby after baby which they don't put shoes on. Their teeth only last until the 2nd or 3rd baby, they smoke cigarettes. They've dropped out in 11th grade cause they are in love and pregnant. They don't work. Black men seem to love them. They disgust me. Is that enough.
But ultimately, they are white so if they can get a little money (you know a grandmother or something dies, lottery, worker compensation suite) and move away and they are just another white woman. No discrimination worth talking about.

While I don't think anyone has directly answered your question, they have given you a lot of excellent examples. I'm assuming that you're assuming that because they are poor, these women are less educated and need this concept spelled out more simply than the norm. First off, I think that's bogus. Secondly, I'll try to delineate the definition in some simple terms.
Social discrimination is discrimination based on social status. If you judge the quality of people based on their socio-economic status, you are participating in social discrimination. In other words, if you judge me based on my social and monetary standing, and if I judge you based on the same criterion, we are both socially discriminating against each other.
I hope this helps.

I noticed that your questions included the demographics "living in the south eastern portion of the US" which everyone else so far has seemed to ignore. As a Southern gal, one of my biggest pet peeves is how my southern accent is regarded by Non-Southerners. Some people equate a southern accent to stupidity or ignorance. I have been asked the most inane questions, such as "did you graduate high school?" I am a self-employed single woman with an MBA, which I earned going to school at night, part time, because I was poor. Yes I graduated high school. "How long have you been wearing shoes?" is another popular question I hear a lot. We are regarded as "rednecks", "trailer trash", "hillbillies", "country bumpkins" and every other sort of asinine, stupid social stereotype. I think much of this is due to the entertainment industry. Southerners are typically depicted as ignorant, uneducated "white trash". Not all of us run around barefoot with babies on our hips, waving good-bye to our husband/cousin as he drive off in his jacked-up pick-up truck heading off to his job the fertilizer plant. We don't put ketchup on filet mignon and we actually have indoor plumbing. And yes, the North whipped Southern butt, but think about this: We were outnumbered 5 to 1 and it still took you five years to do it, so that's nothing to brag about. To sum it up, the definition of social discrimination to any group is basic ignorance.

The only discrimination poor white women face is being second rate to white men. White women are second on the economic food chain.

I do not believe that poor white women face discrimination any differently than any other person who is poor.
