Question:
Why do people think of child rearing as a great woman achievement?

To a person, another woman's child rearing does nothing but fill up the space.
You have to do better than that. Otherwise you're comparing women achievement to that of any animal, or instinct for that matter. Or thing that spreads.

And it's not great by any standards when most people fail at it [raising children], and that's why the planet is messed up.

I'm sure you know a sole woman doesn't raise a child, a family and ultimately a society does (ever heard the saying "it takes a village"?). I don't consider [successful] child rearing a "woman achievement" (what about dads?). I consider it a human achievement. And one of the greatest, too. There's few things the world needs more than good people.

Although if you do consider mostly everyone on Earth to be just 'space-fillers' it will be hard to argue with you about the value of good parenting or change your mind at all.

It's an achievement to raise well-behaved, respectful, decent kids, especially with all the negative influences around these days.

If a child wants something it's easier in the short term just to give it to them and avoid tantrums. It's harder to say no and deal with the behaviour afterwards, but the rewards come in the long term. Understanding this isn't an instinct. It's something parents have to learn and it takes dedication to be consistent and follow through.

Human females do not eat their own young when they are born defective. There is no "natural rearing instinct" for over 75% of the animal kingdom. Most lay eggs or spore and that's it. Males in mammalian species will often kill the infants of a female to make her go into estrus faster.

Child rearing is a great HUMAN accomplishment. Humans are willing to invest more than half the natural lifespan to child-rearing. Few other animals can compare to that.

many wild animals learn via instincts all on their own even if the parent dies or abandons them whereas humans have to instill values, an understanding of wide array of complex emotions and a social responsibility to teach their young how to be a decent human being. all we learn is far beyond animal instincts - that's why parents who don't raise their kids often grow up to be unproductive members of society.

it's really the responsibility of both parents to help with child rearing. we shouldn't assume you are a product of poor child rearing but rather you're just one of those "bad apples", maybe?

RIGHT! They treat raising a child like it's an achievement comparable to working your way to a good job, inventing something, or fighting in a war. They also do the same thing with menial household chores such as cooking and cleaning, which take ABSOLUTELY NO effort at all to perform. Any idiot can raise a child, it's biologically programmed into us

EDIT: @Pearl- could a woman, I don't think so! They might chip a nail....LOL. Go make me a sandwich...

But the fact is that nothing is more complex, mysterious and highly developed in this world than a humans, or any other living things. Most of the inventions done by men have been derived from the functions of various living beings.

Also, there are many other influences on children besides parents like their friends, television, internet.

Um, no.

If you are comparing a human female's job to raise children with a female dog's job to raise children and cannot see the difference, I honestly have nothing to say to you.

Its an achievement for either sex. Child rearing is not a woman's duty. Its a PARENTAL responsibility.

Nothing wrong with it - the current failure rate is huge and rising daily.

Can't tell you why, though..... (tongue sticks to inside of cheek)...
