Question:
Why do you think GWS gets so many off-topic questions?

Obviously, from myself included, so not getting at anyone. But I notice a lot of questions about religion and politics as well as dating and relationship advice. What makes ordinary men and women seek out the advice of feminists, or is singles and dating just that bad? And for the regulars, what is it about this group's opinions that makes us ask those off-topic questions here? :-)

personally, i just value peoples opinion here more than others. i used to hang around single and dating alot but its just to fast paced. sometimes you'll get 30 answers to your question, other times 2 or 3 cause its the busiet section on YA so the questions dont remain on the main page too long.

but like i said, i just value peoples opinion more here and i find most put alot of effort into their answers. i know i ve asked off topic questions and ive answered sarcastically but only when the question has been asked repeatedly or been asked by trolls. besides, its nice to have some off topic questions...gives the section variety.

I am here mostly for the fun, and obviously to evaluate myself in the decisions I make by asking how others would do in similar circumstances, time and again. I truly find it hard to agree with the opinion that 'a lot of questions about religion and politics as well as dating and relationship advice' are handed out to the feminists alone. This forum has more than just feminists.

This Y!A is for everybody to ask anything they want. Edit: Might I add that I've come to actually like everyone on this forum GWS, I mean, since I get on here the most. And, I always enjoy reading everyone's opinions on here, be they rude or not. I think we got some interesting, fun and funny people on this forum, and I've come to value their opinions. And now, if I've got a question, I'll ask only on GWS, because, somehow, I feel like I'm more interested to hear these peoples' opinions particularly, than in general posting a question on any other section on here. It's just that I wanna read THEIR opinions, that of the GWS folks. Love you all! K, enough.

Because we're tolerant of it. And besides, these little things you consider off topic are actually on topic. women and religion...Women and politics..Women and dating/relationships...

Now I can see through your loaded question by saying "What makes ordinary men and women seek out the advice of FEMINIST?" but...The mixture here gives attracts people.

Also, contrary to the belief of some men and women on this board, this means that women do not know men or men do not know women...And even the same gender doesn't even know each other. This is what diversity is :).

My guess is that somehow we respect the opinions of those in the community you frequent. Like when you are going to a bar or a church and ask the people you know for advice instead of going to a professional.

If the question is asked elsewhere, chances are that other people will answer them. People you have never seen writing an emotional argument. So you cannot weight if what they are saying is good or bad advice.

Believe it not I was asking myself the same question about four hours ago. I believe that the most respected YA users come in here and post often. It's sort of the cream of the crop in this section. Also, because these gender questions are so political and opinionated in nature you get a sense of which people in here think similiarly to yourself or have common interest. Quite naturally most of us have like-minded people as contacts. About half of my contacts are regulars in this section and so I feel most comfortable posting questions on hot button topics here. I'd bet money that most other regulars in here feel the same way.

People are interested in a certain topic (such as religion, politics, dating, and relationship advice) and want answers in gender-related terms, which is more difficult to get elsewhere in Yahoo! Answers.

Especially if one knows the regulars in this forum and their positions on other matters, there may be a correlation or a pattern to be discovered.

If you want to know what feminists/non-feminists/anti-feminists think about abortion as it relates to men/women, you won't go to "Pregnancy", "Women's Health", or "Law & Ethics". You'll go to "Gender & Women's Studies".

"Gender and Women's Studies" is a vague topic. I go over to the Sports forums too, and they rarely get off-topic questions (once in a while they will). That's because it's usually easy to know what's off-topic when you're talking about baseball. That's not the case on here. A lot of things go into gender studies.

I don't think ordinary men and women seek out the advice of feminists. Unless it is so they can do the opposite. I think feminists seek out the advice of other feminists. Which makes sense.

I like asking off topic questions here b/c of the regulars we have some interesting folks here.

Personally, I think it's because we have such a range of personalities here that makes asking peoples' opinions so interesting. You want a few different views on something? Ask G&WS my friend, because you'll get a wide range almost immediately.

... And then you'll get a VN, lol.

so many things can be included in gender studies. particularly relationships and politics. it's easy to see how a question indirectly is affected by gender.

this category feels like a community to me. i value the opinions of my neighbors, though we often disagree.

Well alot of people here just like the community.

That surprises me as well because usually the validity of feminist advice in any area of life is very very low.

The designated topic is laughable and intellectually bankrupt. Thank the great Buddha for every divagation.
