many religions had female gods, some that were greater than even the male gods. one thing i always thought was funny in greek mythology was the fact that zeus was the highest ranking of all the greek gods and goddess, but he was still scared of the wrath of his wife, hera. in 1 story, he seduced/raped a young woman, then as hera was coming near, he turned the girl into a cow, so is wife wouldn't find out he was cheating on her. and many ancient and pre-historic societies held women very highly, because they are the bringers of life. here's a link with lots of info about women in religions:
